R2R Pilot Project

Streamlining metadata reporting and data submission for the UNOLS Academic Research Fleet

Rolling Deck To RepositoryNSF-supported research vessels collectively produce an enormous volume and diversity of scientific data every year. In the marine sciences there is growing emphasis on greater re-use of shipboard data beyond the original cruise participants, especially with today’s rapidly rising ship costs. The Rolling Deck to Repository project is a prototype effort that will facilitate data management by connecting ship operators with a centralized shoreside data repository.

Working directly with ship operators, the R2R project will develop and field-test options for more complete and consistent metadata generation, data collection, quality control, and reporting. This streamlined system will help transform the U.S. academic research fleet from a set of independent data collection activities into an integrated ocean observing system – a network of ships and submersibles around the world that routinely report a standard suite of underway data and documentation to a central repository.
